Q: Do hate crime laws give Special Protection to some groups, but not others?
A: No. Hate crime laws protect us all, regardless of race, cultural or ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation. Our laws do not distinguish between different groups, such as between whites and people of color or among Christians, Muslims, and Jews. The laws protect everyone. But we must also recognize that in our diverse society, certain groups have more often been targeted and victimized. We can ensure the safety and dignity of members of any one group by protecting the rights of members of every group.
